I just stumbled on this by accident and would like to thank you for the memories.
I joined the mob in 79 and left ten years later and rue the day I ever walked out of the gates at Rosyth without a look back. Though you were on different ships, you have stirred up a whole heap of thoughts that I thought were hidden forever.
I joined at Raleigh, went to Pembroke (East camp (CK), then Fife (Training Ship), then Nelson, then Naiad – Swapped to Yarmouth and went down south in 82, then Gannet (819 Sqdn), then Alderney (Fish Boat), then Faslane, decided I wanted to be a submariner, went to Dolphin (and Finwhale), then Swiftsure then Sceptre. Up until yesterday, id forgotten all of that. Im damn sure i know some of the blokes you mention, but that might be my mind playing tricks and actually I just know a lot of blokes like them, getting up to the same stuff as them.
I am now steeped in nostalga and slightly pee’d off to find that when I go round trying to visit my old navy days via Google Earth, I find much of it is now housing developments – Pembroke was the first disapointment – where have the stack of cannon balls down the main gate gone that I had to dismantle, polish and put back when under puns – getting shit from the lads as they went ashore to the Royal Marine (which thank goodness is still there – and still looks the same).
Where’d Chatham Dockyard gate go????… Whats happened to the main gate at Guz dockyard (Levendale – just a big blue thing there now), why’r there civvies on all the main gates? Just doesnt look the same anymore – very sad.
Im now going to check out if the pubs are still there. Mucky Duck, – Portsmouth and so is the Two Twigs in Guz is so thats a start…..
I could go on, and on, but I wont. Not now anyway…
